What to see and do from Les Dunes de Contis
Les Dunes de Contis is a fantastic place for a family holiday, as it's surrounded by pine forest nature and close to the coastline, with beautiful beaches nearby.
Bordered by dunes and the Landes forest, Contis beach is just 6km away from the village. This area is beautiful, and tranquility reigns here - the perfect place for a scenic and relaxing holiday.
Mimizan is a pretty little seaside town with its main attraction being beach life and nature. Mimizan beach runs 10km long with a children's beach, which provides lots of opportunities for watersports. Why not go kayaking along Le Courant river, or take a leisurely stroll on the stunning La Promenade Fleurie, one of the prettiest walking trails in France?
Just 50km away, Biscarrosse is a beautiful place to go to for the great waves. Try surfing with a class, or experiment sand yachting. What's great is that your kids can splash around in safety as the beach is watched over by lifeguards during summer. Biscarrosse is also home to three lovely lakes, providing the opportunity for dad to go fishing.
Activites and places not to miss
Sitting on the banks of the Garonne River, Bordeaux is considered the Wine Capital of the World and you’ll certainly find lots of wine bars and cafés to sample these fine wines. Famous chateaux are dotted around the outskirts of Bordeaux and wine tasting in the leafy Pessac Léognan region is well worth a trip. Central Bordeaux is easy to walk around with lots of pedestrianised and cobbled streets. Did you know that Bordeaux also has the largest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe! Stroll along the quays, take a boat trip along the Garonne and enjoy the stunning 18th century architecture which has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The water mirroir just opposite the Place de la Bourse is a must-do; kids will love running around and cooling down here on a hot summers day.
Dune du Pilat
60km south of Bordeaux, this is the highest sand dune in Europe, at 100m. From the summit you are rewarded with spectacular views of the ocean, Arcachon Bay, and on clear days even the Pyrenees Mountains. Parasailing is popular here and you’ll appreciate the little bars and restaurants at the bottom of the Dune.
In this warm and peaceful spa town, hot springs bubble at a constant 64 degrees celsius and you’re positively encouraged to cover yourself in mud. Before leaving, stretch your legs along the banks of the River Adou or in the colourful public gardens, where you’ll see lots of other families having a stroll.
Soak up the surf in Hossegor, where people from the world over come and visit for the quality waves. Hossegor is known also for its golfing reputation, with its18 hole green and several golf competitions on throughout the year. With 4 beaches surrounding a large lake, Hossegor provides many nautical delights for all the family.
Biarritz is a glitzy coastal hot spot, a magnet for surfers with history to boot. The town is renowned for its world-class surf and host to many surfing competitions such as the Quicksilver/Roxy Jam tournament. So if it’s waves and beach you’re after against a stunning rocky coastal backdrop, Biarritz more than fits the bill.
In the town centre, there’s plenty else to do if you’re looking for culture. Biarritz is home to the elegant la Chapelle Imperiale, designed for Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, as well as the 19th century Russian orthodox church, known for its famous blue dome, which was a haven for visiting members of Russian high society.
Bayonne is a small town steeped in rich culture and history, situated between the sea and mountains in the unique region of the Pays Basque. The town is famous for its fantastic French, Basque and Spanish-influenced cuisine - specifically for its cured ham, chocolate and cheese, which makes it a great visit if you love food (or in French, a "gourmand")! It's also home to the Fête de Bayonne, an enormous festival that takes place every year when everyone takes to the streets in white and red for a festive sing and dance.
When you explore the town, Bayonne is charming and pretty, with cute boutiques giving you the excuse to have a little shop round for local Bayonne-inspired trinkets, and a pretty canal for leisurely walks in town.
San Sebastián, Spain
San Sebastián is a beautiful must-see coastal town close to the south west border of France, with a unique Basque feel and lively atmosphere. There's lots to do here, from sunbathing on the seaside at Playa de la Concha, surf watching at Playa de Gros, tapas sampling at the local restaurants or fabulous fine dining at one of the many Michelin starred restaurants here. Drink in this sunny, sultry city, full of rich culture and fun to enjoy for all the family.
